And they leave, as per Enjolras’s requests, all the while looking over their shoulders at his slumped form. They have always been happy together, even before Grantaire joined Les Amis de l’ABC. Combeferre and Courfeyrac exchange worried glances, but it’s obvious neither of them know what to do or what exactly is going on. Grantaire isn’t close enough to hear the conversation between the two of them and Courfeyrac, but he can see Enjolras gesturing as though he’s waving his closest friends off, and if he had to make an educated guess, he would assume Enjolras is also telling them he’s fine. “I think that’s all we have for the agenda today,” Combeferre concludes, looking at Enjolras, who can only nod. At least the flowers he spits out aren’t bloody, which means the disease is still in its first stages. It hurts because he has been in love with Enjolras for years now, but he would do anything to prevent him from succumbing to the cruel clutches of the awful flower illness, even if Enjolras’s affections don’t belong to him.Īt the moment, all Grantaire can do is watch helplessly during the meeting as Enjolras’s hacking coughs rattle loudly. They’re happy together, and Grantaire loathes himself for envying them.Įnjolras coughing up flowers can only mean that he’s in unrequited love with someone, and Grantaire hurts inside. He’s heard of the flowers, witnessed Éponine tear them up in frustration when she thought she was in unrequited love with Marius, only to have them fade away when she found Cosette, who saved her in more ways than one. Seeing the flowers makes Grantaire’s heart lurch painfully, and his chest tightens. Enjolras seems to grow angrier and angrier when the coughing starts interrupting his speeches, so much that Combeferre has to take over after pushing a glass of water towards him, and he casts the flowers to the ground, glaring at them. Grantaire already pays too much attention to Enjolras, so it’s easy to spot the white petals, no matter how hard he tries to hide it.
